Hot Springs Cove by Zodiac
For those seeking an exciting West Coast experience, with a real connection to the elements, join us on one of our fast-paced Zodiac Hot Springs Cove tours.
Cruise into the heart of Clayoquot Sound through the protected inlet waters or along the outer-coast towards Hot Springs Cove located 26 nautical miles from Tofino at Maquinna Provincial Park. A long-time favourite stopover of locals and passing fishing vessels, this magical place is accessible only by boat or plane.
Although we do not offer any guaranteed sightings on this tour, the 1-1.5 hour scenic boat ride each way presents many opportunities to view wildlife such as Whales, Bears, Sea Otters, Eagles, Seals, Sea Lions and much more.
Once your skipper drops you off at Hot Springs Cove, hike for 30 – 40 minutes along a raised cedar boardwalk trail through the vibrant temperate rainforest. This allows you 2-hours to explore and soak in the natural thermal hot spring pools that have poured over the rocks and into the ocean for thousands of years.
Located nearby are outhouses, change rooms, and a covered seating area. After your soak, enjoy your peaceful surroundings before exploring the rainforest on your way back to the boat.
Our Zodiacs offer a chance to experience the thrill of a fast-paced boat ride on our way to view the diverse amount of wildlife along our coastline as you make your way towards Hot Springs Cove. Some of the features of our Zodiacs include:
- 12-passenger vessels
- Comfortable forward-facing seats
- Protective flotation suits, gloves, and toques (beanies) provided
- Emergency marine toilet (currently unavailable due to Covid-19)
*Zodiac Warning* – PLEASE READ BEFORE BOOKING THIS TOUR
NOTE: While Zodiacs are a fun way to experience a Hot Springs Cove tour, they’re not suitable for everyone. We do not recommend this tour to anyone with a history of serious medical conditions. These include, but are not limited to, anyone who is pregnant, those with back or neck problems, osteoporosis, incontinence, or recent surgery. Anyone under the height of 4’8″ (142cm) is also unable to join our Zodiac tours.
While every Hot Springs tour may vary a little bit, below are estimates of how you will spend your time throughout your 6 to 6.5-hour journey to and from Hot Springs Cove.
- 1-1.5 hour boat ride to get to Hot Springs Cove
- 30-40 minute boardwalk hike from the dock to the hot springs
- 2 hours to change and then soak in the hot springs
- 30-40-minute boardwalk hike back to the dock
- 1-1.5 hour boat ride back to Tofino
- There are two composting toilet facilities – one at the beginning of the trail and another at the hot springs.
- Change rooms are available so you can pack your bathing suit to avoid wearing it all day.
- There is a covered unlocked storage area that provides a dry place to leave your belongings.
- There are no stores or facilities to purchase items at Hot Springs Cove so come prepared for a full-day adventure.
- There is no garbage pick-up at the park, so anything you bring with you must also be packed out with you.
- The hot springs are naturally sulphurous, so expect a natural aroma.
- Jewelry worn in the springs may tarnish in reaction to the natural spring water. Although it’s easily polished again, some find it easier to remove it before entering the pools.
On our Hot Springs Cove tours, we frequently see whales and other marine mammals. While we love sharing the experience of watching whales and other wildlife with our guests, we also follow guidelines to ensure we’re not encroaching on or disturbing the wildlife in its natural habitat.
Due to government regulations, we do not approach closer than 100 metres to all whales with the exception of Transient (Bigg’s) Killer Whales which we do not approach closer than 200 metres. While we do not approach closer than the noted distances, occasionally, while our vessels are turned off, the whales get curious and approach our vessels. At this point, we will retreat to the noted distances when it is safe to do so.
Be sure to bring binoculars for close-up views of these amazing marine mammals.
*Please note that wildlife sightings are not guaranteed on our Hot Springs Cove tours*
What should I bring for my tour?
For our Hot Springs Cove tours, you will need to bring the following…
-Comfortable walking shoes for the trail
-Swimsuit and towel
-Full lunch & beverages (no glass please). There is no fresh-water drinking source available.
-Although not necessary, water shoes, sandals or old running shoes are recommended if you have them. The terrain is rocky and can often be slippery.
-A backpack or tote bag to comfortably carry your belongings.
How accessible are the Hot Springs?
Upon being dropped off at the dock at Maquinna Provincial Park, guests then have a 30-40 minute hike along a boardwalk that features many stairs. Once arriving at the hot springs pools, guests must navigate the rocky coastline that surrounds these natural pools in order to get in and out and maneuver around the pools. Because of these reasons, we do not recommend this tour for anyone with mobility issues.
Do I need to worry bout seasickness?
If you are prone to motion sickness while in a car or have experienced seasickness in the past, we recommend being prepared by visiting a pharmacy to discuss the best option for you. Fortunately, there are many options to reduce the risk of becoming seasick. We recommend taking any over-the-counter seasickness remedies a few hours prior to your departure to allow you to see the best results.
Generally, seasickness only occurs on our whale watching tours. It’s rare for guests to feel seasick on our Hot Springs Cove tours.
Our Hot Springs Cove tours have a 24-hour cancellation policy. If any cancellations are received, including a reduction in the passenger numbers, within 24 hours of the tour departure refunds will not be issued. Any cancellations outside of 24-hours will receive a 100% refund.
